Fuzzy Onchidoris

Onchidoris muricata

Onchidoris muricata is a small sea slug characterized by its soft body and fuzzy appearance, which helps distinguish it from other nudibranchs. This species can reach a maximum length of 1.4 cm. It is typically found on and under rocks and kelp, often covered with bryozoans, which are its primary food source. Divers may encounter this nudibranch in various locations along the European coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean, extending to the British Isles and as far south as Maine in the northwest Atlantic. It is also recorded in the northeast Pacific Ocean, from Friday Harbor, Washington, to Lion Rock in California, inhabiting depths ranging from 0 to 64 meters, although most sightings occur shallower than 40 meters. The Fuzzy Onchidoris feeds on encrusting bryozoans, grazing on these organisms as it moves slowly along the substrate. As a simultaneous hermaphrodite, this species engages in unique mating behaviors where individuals exchange roles as male and female during reproduction. Eggs are laid on a suitable substrate, where they develop into planktonic larvae before maturing into adults. When encountered during a dive, divers may observe the Fuzzy Onchidoris moving slowly across the seafloor or nestled among its preferred habitats. Its delicate and fuzzy appearance makes it a charming find for underwater enthusiasts. Currently, the conservation status of this species is not evaluated.
