Blue Tilapia

Oreochromis aureus

The blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) is a freshwater cichlid in the family Cichlidae, native to North and West Africa and the Middle East. Adults reach up to 45 cm and 2 kg with a deep, laterally compressed body. Males during breeding develop intense metallic blue coloration on the head and body, while females and non-breeding fish are grey to silvery with a bluish tinge. This species inhabits lakes, rivers, ponds, and springs at depths of 0-10 meters. As an introduced species in many regions including Florida, they are commonly encountered by freshwater divers in spring systems where clear water allows excellent observation. Blue tilapia are omnivorous, feeding on algae, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates. Males construct circular nest craters in sandy substrates and aggressively defend them during breeding. Females are mouthbrooders, carrying eggs and fry in their mouths for protection.
