Oxypora crassispinosa

Oxypora crassispinosa is a coral species found in the Western Central Pacific region. It inhabits reef-associated environments, typically within a depth range of 0 to 30 meters. This coral is part of the family Lobophylliidae, which is known for its reef-building capabilities. Divers can encounter this species across various dive sites, where it contributes to the complex structure of coral reefs. The reproductive strategy of Oxypora crassispinosa involves both gonochoric and hermaphroditic individuals. Mature gametes are released into the coelenteron and subsequently spawned through the mouth. The life cycle includes a planktonic planula larva stage, which undergoes metamorphosis, developing tentacles, septa, and a pharynx before settling on the substrate. The conservation status of Oxypora crassispinosa is listed as Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List. However, it is included in CITES Appendix II. Divers observing this coral may notice its role in providing habitat and contributing to the biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems.
