Chicken Grunt

Parapristipoma trilineatum

The Chicken Grunt is a reef fish belonging to the family Haemulidae. It has a fusiform, or spindle-shaped, body which is typical for many fish in its family. This species can grow up to 40 cm in length and is known for its preference for subtropical waters. Divers may encounter the Chicken Grunt in regions such as southern Japan, the East China Sea, and Taiwan. It inhabits rocky shores and is adapted to warm, high-salinity environments. This fish is oceanodromous, meaning it migrates within the ocean, often moving between offshore and inshore areas seasonally. Breeding behavior of the Chicken Grunt is oviparous, with distinct pairing during the breeding season. Pairs quickly ascend to the surface to spawn, a behavior that divers might witness if visiting during the right season. In terms of conservation, the Chicken Grunt is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species is also of commercial importance and is cultured and released for fisheries in Japan. Divers observing this species can expect to see it in small groups or pairs, often near rocky reefs.
