Silverbelly
Parequula melbournensis
The Silverbelly, also known as the Melbourne silver biddy, is a ray-finned fish found in the coastal waters of southern Australia. It inhabits depths ranging from 3 to 100 meters, commonly found over sandy bottoms and seagrass beds on the continental shelf. This species can grow up to 22 cm in length and is characterized by a long-based anal fin and a dorsal fin that is not anteriorly elevated, distinguishing it from similar species like Gerres subfasciatus. Divers may encounter the Silverbelly in temperate waters from southern Western Australia to Victoria, including Tasmania. The fish tends to inhabit areas rich in sand and seagrass, making it a common sight in these habitats. However, divers can enjoy observing this species year-round, as it does not exhibit significant seasonal migrations or spawning aggregations.
