Risso's Cusk-Eel
Parophidion vassali
Risso's Cusk-eel, a member of the family Ophidiidae, is an uncommon species found in the temperate waters of the Eastern Atlantic, specifically within the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent northeast Atlantic. This species is typically associated with the deeper parts of the continental shelf, making it a demersal fish. Divers might encounter this species at depths where 50% of its occurrences are shallower than 40 meters, but it can be found up to about 210 meters deep. Risso's Cusk-eel reaches a maximum length of 25 cm and is known for its oviparous reproductive behavior. The species produces oval pelagic eggs that float in a gelatinous mass, a unique aspect of its life cycle. The conservation status of Risso's Cusk-eel is currently not evaluated. Divers should note that this species is harmless to humans and is of no interest to fisheries.
