Leopard Nudibranch
Peltodoris atromaculata
The leopard nudibranch (Peltodoris atromaculata), also known as the dotted sea slug, is a large dorid nudibranch reaching up to 12 cm. It has a pale cream to yellow body covered with distinctive dark brown to black spots in a pattern resembling a leopard or cow, earning it nicknames of leopard slug and Swiss cow. Found almost exclusively in the Mediterranean Sea, it inhabits rocky reefs, sponge-covered walls, and caves at depths of 5 to 50 meters. This species feeds on the sponge Petrosia ficiformis, and its spotted pattern may provide camouflage against the mottled sponge surfaces. It is one of the largest and most commonly encountered nudibranchs in the Mediterranean, making it a reliable macro photography target. Its bold spot pattern and substantial size make it one of the most photogenic invertebrates on Mediterranean dives.
