Pencil Isopod
Pentidotea aculeata
Pencil Isopods are crustaceans belonging to the family Idoteidae and are found along the coast of California. They inhabit the intertidal region, which is the area that is submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide. This habitat is characterized by its dynamic nature, with fluctuating water levels and varying environmental conditions. The Pencil Isopod is adapted to life in this challenging environment. The species is part of the order Isopoda, which is known for its gonochoric members, meaning individuals are distinctly male or female. Mating typically occurs before or during the parturial molt, a process where the isopod sheds its exoskeleton. The eggs are brooded in a specialized pouch called the marsupium, and they hatch into a stage known as manca postlarva before developing into adults. These isopods are not evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN. Observations of this species have been recorded at numerous dive sites.
