Seaweed Isopod

Pentidotea stenops

The Seaweed Isopod is a benthic crustacean belonging to the family Idoteidae and order Isopoda. Found primarily off the coast of California, USA, this isopod thrives in shallow marine environments. Its habitat is closely associated with seaweed, where it blends in with the surroundings, making it a master of camouflage. This adaptation helps it avoid predators and increases its chances of survival in the wild. Seaweed Isopods are known for their unique reproductive behavior. They are mostly gonochoric, meaning individuals are distinctly male or female. Mating typically occurs before or during the parturial molt, with sperm transfer being indirect. The eggs are brooded in a specialized pouch called the marsupium, where they develop into manca postlarvae before maturing into adults. Divers encountering the Seaweed Isopod can expect a cryptic creature that is well-camouflaged among seaweed. Though not evaluated for conservation status, the species is known to inhabit various dive sites.
