Giant Cichlid

Petenia splendida

The bay snook (Petenia splendida) is a large, impressive cichlid reaching up to 50 cm. It has an elongated body with a highly protrusible mouth that can extend forward dramatically to engulf prey. Coloration varies from silvery-green to deep red-gold, with specimens from different habitats showing distinct color morphs. Native to the Atlantic drainages of Central America from Mexico to Guatemala and Belize, it inhabits rivers, lagoons, cenotes, and lakes at depths of 0 to 15 meters. This apex freshwater predator feeds on small fish, catching them with lightning-fast mouth extension strikes. Its large size, striking coloration, and spectacular feeding behavior make it one of the most impressive freshwater fish encountered during cenote and river dives in Central America.
