Flathead Gudgeon

Philypnodon grandiceps

The flathead gudgeon (Philypnodon grandiceps) is a small freshwater fish in the family Eleotridae, endemic to eastern Australia. Adults reach about 8-12 cm with a broad, distinctively flattened head, wide mouth, and a stout body. Coloration is mottled brown to grey with darker blotches, providing excellent camouflage against rocky and sandy substrates. This species inhabits rivers, streams, lakes, and lagoons at depths of 0-3 meters throughout the Murray-Darling Basin and in coastal drainages from Queensland to northern Tasmania. Flathead gudgeons are ambush predators that lie motionless on the bottom, waiting to strike at passing invertebrates and small fish. They prefer areas with rocky or gravelly substrates and moderate flow. Their excellent camouflage and bottom-dwelling habits mean they are often overlooked until they make sudden predatory strikes, making them an interesting find for observant freshwater divers.
