Polkadotted Hermit

Phimochirus operculatus

The Polkadotted Hermit, a member of the family Paguridae, is a small crustacean found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Florida to the southern Caribbean. This hermit crab is typically found in shallow waters, from the intertidal zone down to depths of 15 meters. It inhabits benthic environments, where it can often be seen scuttling across sandy or rocky bottoms. Like other hermit crabs, it occupies empty shells for protection, which it changes as it grows. The Polkadotted Hermit is part of the order Decapoda, known for their gonochoric nature, meaning individuals are distinctly male or female. They engage in a precopulatory courtship ritual that involves olfactory and tactile cues, leading to indirect sperm transfer. This behavior is common among decapods and plays a crucial role in their reproductive cycle. Divers encountering the Polkadotted Hermit may observe its cautious movements as it forages for food.
