Nautical Phyllidia

Phyllidia marindica

Nautical Phyllidia, known scientifically as Phyllidia marindica, is a distinctive species of sea slug found in various marine environments. This nudibranch features a pattern of black on its back, marked by large yellow-capped tubercles that are surrounded by pale blue rings. As one moves towards the edges of its mantle, the blue areas blend together, and the tubercles become smaller and more numerous, losing their yellow caps. The rhinophores of this species are yellow, which adds to its unique appearance. It is often encountered in regions ranging from South Africa to Thailand and north-west Australia, typically in shallow waters, as it has been recorded at depths shallower than 40 meters, with 90% of occurrences at depths around 30 meters or less. This species was first described from Mauritius and is considered common in its distribution. In terms of diet, Nautical Phyllidia primarily feeds on sponges, which are abundant in its habitat. While specific breeding behaviors are not detailed in the sources, nudibranchs generally exhibit hermaphroditic traits and can engage in complex mating rituals. Encountering this species while diving can be an interesting experience, as divers may observe its slow movements and unique coloration against the backdrop of coral reefs or rocky substrates.
