Pione lampa
Pione lampa is a sponge species belonging to the family Clionaidae. This sessile organism is found in tropical waters across the Western Indian Ocean, Western Central Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Red Sea. Divers may encounter it at depths ranging from 2 to 15 meters, often attached to substrates where it bores into the material. Its presence is recorded at numerous dive sites. As a member of the class Demospongiae, Pione lampa is hermaphroditic. The reproductive cycle involves the development of a zygote into a free-swimming parenchymella larva. This larva eventually settles onto a substrate, where it matures into a young sponge. Divers encountering Pione lampa might find it interesting to observe its boring behavior, as it forms holes in the substrate it inhabits. While the IUCN has not evaluated its conservation status, it is important for divers to appreciate the ecological role these sponges play in their environments.
