Placospherastra antillensis
Placospherastra antillensis is a sponge species belonging to the family Placospongiidae and order Clionaida. This species is primarily found in the Western Central Atlantic region, specifically around Belize and Bonaire, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. It thrives in tropical environments and is typically located at depths ranging from 20 to 60 meters. Divers may encounter this species under coral rubble and within reef caves, particularly in coralline algae reefs, algal nodules, and lower mesophotic reefs. The sponge is sessile, meaning it is fixed in one place and does not move around. There is limited information available regarding the diet and reproductive behaviors of Placospherastra antillensis, as well as its appearance and distinguishing features compared to similar species. However, it is known to be harmless to humans and has not been evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN, CITES, or CMS. Divers exploring the habitats where this species resides may observe it as part of the benthic community.
