Polycera janjukia

Polycera janjukia is a species of sea slug belonging to the family Polyceridae. This nudibranch is characterized by its shell-less body, which can be identified by its distinct coloration and shape. It is primarily found in the waters of Australia, specifically in Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania, inhabiting demersal environments at depths ranging from 0 to 20 meters. Divers may encounter this species on rocky reefs and other suitable substrates where it blends into the surroundings, making it a challenge to spot. The diet of Polycera janjukia consists mainly of small invertebrates, which it grazes on while moving slowly across the substrate. As a hermaphroditic species, individuals possess both male and female reproductive organs. During mating, two nudibranchs engage in a unique behavior where they extend their bodies and dart their penises toward one another, with the dominant individual penetrating the body wall of the other to fertilize the eggs. These eggs are then deposited on a suitable substratum, where they develop into a planktonic larval stage before growing into adults. Encounters with Polycera janjukia during dives can be intriguing, as divers must pay close attention to their surroundings to spot these elusive creatures. Their coloration often allows them to camouflage effectively against the substrate, enhancing their survival in the wild. The conservation status of this species has not been evaluated, indicating a lack of comprehensive data on its population trends and threats.
