Giant Jelly Ascidian
Polycitor giganteus
Polycitor giganteus is a sessile organism that can reach a maximum length of 6.0 cm. This species is typically found in shallow subtidal waters, inhabiting depths ranging from 7 to 24 meters. It is distributed across the Indo-West Pacific region, particularly in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Divers may encounter this ascidian on rocky reefs or in other suitable habitats within its depth range. The Giant Jelly Ascidian is hermaphroditic, meaning it possesses both male and female reproductive organs. It typically reproduces through cross- and self-fertilization. The life cycle begins when eggs develop into lecithotrophic larvae, which eventually metamorphose into benthic adults. This reproductive strategy allows for a flexible approach to breeding, adapting to the environmental conditions in which it lives. When divers come across Polycitor giganteus, they may observe its distinctive jelly-like appearance, which helps differentiate it from other ascidians. The species is not evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status remains unknown.
