Eyespot Damselfish

Pomacentrus andamanensis

The Eyespot Damselfish is a small reef fish found in the Eastern Indian Ocean, specifically in the Andaman Sea near Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia. It typically inhabits marine pelagic-neritic zones at depths ranging from 2 to 35 meters, with a preference for shallower waters between 2 to 15 meters. This species can reach a maximum length of 6.4 cm and is characterized by its compressed body and distinct coloration. The upper two-thirds of its body and dorsal head are pale lavender to bluish gray, while the rest, including the fins, is yellowish. Notable features include small blue spots on the body scales, large lavender spots and bands on the side of the head, and a greenish spot on the upper opercle near the lateral-line origin. A small blackish spot is present at the base of the uppermost pectoral-fin rays, and blue to lavender stripes and spots adorn the dorsal and anal fins. A distinct ocellus is found on the rear dorsal fin in both juveniles and adults. This species has not been evaluated for the IUCN Red List.
