Paletail Damsel

Pomacentrus trichrourus

The Paletail Damsel is a small reef fish commonly found in the Western Indian Ocean, particularly from the Red Sea down to the east African coast reaching as far south as Natal, South Africa. It is known for its compressed body shape and exhibits geographic color variations, which can make it challenging to distinguish from similar damselfish species. The Paletail Damsel typically inhabits both inshore and offshore coral reefs, thriving in tropical marine environments. Divers can encounter this species at depths ranging from 1 to 43 meters, where it is often seen hovering around coral formations. The species is non-migratory, making it a consistent presence in its preferred habitats. Breeding behavior of the Paletail Damsel involves distinct pairing, with males taking on the role of guarding and aerating the demersal eggs that adhere to the substrate. This species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
