Bath's Goby

Pomatoschistus bathi

Bath's Goby is a small goby species reaching up to 8.9 cm in length, though more commonly around 3 cm. It is characterized by its elongated body shape with a slightly depressed appearance. The pectoral fins have 14-16 rays, and males typically display several short bars on the lower half of their flanks, while females have 3-4 bars. The eyes are positioned dorso-laterally, and the species has reduced swim bladders, which is typical for bottom-dwelling fish. This species inhabits the eastern Mediterranean and the Sea of Marmara, often found at depths ranging from 7 to 14 meters. It prefers substrates with sand, mud, or a mixture of both, and can also be found in areas with gravel or rocky sand ecotones. Bath's Goby is a meiofauna feeder, consuming a variety of benthic prey such as zoobenthos and zooplankton, including bosmiden, brine shrimps, lobster eggs, and oyster eggs. Divers encountering Bath's Goby might find it in sandy or muddy-bottomed habitats, where it exhibits bottom-dwelling behavior. It is not a shy species, and its cryptic nature allows it to blend into its environment. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with no significant threats known to its population.
