Wire Coral Shrimp

Pontonides unciger

Wire coral shrimp, belonging to the family Palaemonidae, are small crustaceans found in tropical Indo-Pacific waters. These shrimp are typically associated with coral reefs, where they reside on the surfaces of living coral branches. Divers can encounter them at depths ranging from the surface down to 45 meters. Their habitat preference for coral branches provides them with both food and protection, making them an integral part of the reef ecosystem. Wire coral shrimp are known for their unique reproductive behavior. As members of the order Decapoda, they are mostly gonochoric, meaning individuals are distinctly male or female. They engage in a precopulatory courtship ritual, which involves olfactory and tactile cues, and usually, sperm transfer is indirect. This intricate mating behavior is a notable aspect of their life cycle. While diving, encountering wire coral shrimp can be a rewarding experience. They are not evaluated by the IUCN Red List. However, their presence suggests they are relatively widespread within their distribution range.
