Twobar Cardinalfish

Pristicon rhodopterus

The Twobar Cardinalfish is a reef-associated species found in the tropical waters of the Western Central Pacific, ranging from Singapore to Indonesia and Australia. It typically inhabits shallow, protected reefs within lagoons or harbors, at depths ranging from 3 to 35 meters. This species can grow up to 15 cm in total length, though a more common size is around 7 cm. Its body is short and compressed, and it is distinguished from similar species like Apogon trimaculatus by the absence of an opercle spot. Twobar Cardinalfish are nocturnal creatures, often encountered alone rather than in schools. They exhibit distinct pairing behavior during courtship and spawning, and are known to be mouthbrooders, where the male carries the eggs in his mouth until they hatch. Divers might spot these fish during night dives, where their solitary nature and preference for protected reef areas become apparent. The IUCN has assessed the Twobar Cardinalfish as Least Concern. Divers can enjoy observing this harmless species year-round, as it does not exhibit any known seasonal migration or spawning aggregations.
