Blue Dartfish
Ptereleotris calliura
The Blue Dartfish is a reef-associated species found in the tropical waters of the Western Atlantic, particularly around southern Florida, Belize, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Divers can spot these fish at depths ranging from 5 to 50 meters, although most are found shallower than 40 meters, with a significant number residing above 30 meters. They are known for their slender bodies, reaching a maximum length of 12.5 cm. Blue Dartfish are distinguished by their ability to hover over their burrows in open sandy areas, a behavior that sets them apart from other reef fish. Observing these fish during a dive can be a peaceful experience as they hover gracefully over their burrows. The conservation status of the Blue Dartfish is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Divers can enjoy encounters with these fish year-round, as there is no noted seasonality in their presence.
