Ovate Chromis
Pycnochromis ovatiformis
The Ovate Chromis is a small reef fish belonging to the family Pomacentridae, commonly found in the Western Pacific region, including areas from Miyakejima to Okinawajima and Taiwan, with reports from the Philippines. This species typically inhabits outer coral and rocky reefs at depths ranging from 10 to 40 meters. Divers are likely to encounter them in subtropical waters where they reside in non-migratory patterns. Characterized by a short and deep body shape with a compressed cross-section, the Ovate Chromis can reach a maximum length of 10 cm. It features 12 to 13 dorsal spines and soft rays, along with 2 anal spines and 12 to 14 anal soft rays. These morphological features help distinguish it from similar species in the same habitat. The Ovate Chromis is a diurnal and oviparous species, exhibiting distinct pairing during breeding. Their eggs are demersal, adhering to the substrate, and are guarded and aerated by the males. Encountering this species while diving can offer a glimpse into their reproductive behaviors. The Ovate Chromis is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
