Mushroom Coral Reticulida
Reticulidia fungia
Reticulidia fungia is a small sea slug that typically reaches a length of up to 40 mm. It is characterized by broad-based ridges on its body, which are fewer in number compared to those of similar species like Reticulidia halgerda. The ridges have a fine white border at their base, while the mantle margin displays a blue-grey color. A distinctive single black line runs around the side of its foot, positioned slightly above its gills. This species is found in various tropical regions, including Fiji, Micronesia, Eastern Australia, Taiwan, Christmas Island, Bali, and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. It inhabits benthic environments and is usually recorded at depths shallower than 40 meters, with a significant number of occurrences at about 30 meters or less. As a hermaphrodite, Reticulidia fungia engages in unique mating behaviors where individuals may alternate roles between male and female during reproduction. Eggs are laid on suitable substrates, developing into planktonic larvae before maturing into adults. Encounters with this species during dives can be intriguing, as divers may observe its distinctive coloration and morphology among coral reefs and rocky substrates. While the conservation status of Reticulidia fungia has not been evaluated, it is recorded at numerous dive sites, indicating a presence in various marine ecosystems.
