Seagrass Elbow Crab

Rhinolambrus pelagicus

The Seagrass Elbow Crab, a member of the family Parthenopidae, is a benthic crustacean found in the tropical waters of the Western Central Pacific, specifically around Singapore. Divers may encounter this species in seagrass beds, where it blends into its surroundings with its cryptic appearance. The crab's body is adapted for a life on the ocean floor, making it well-suited for its benthic habitat. The species exhibits typical decapod reproductive behavior, with gonochoric individuals engaging in precopulatory courtship rituals involving olfactory and tactile cues, followed by indirect sperm transfer. Divers exploring seagrass beds might spot this elusive crab, although its cryptic nature can make it a challenge to find. The Seagrass Elbow Crab is harmless to humans and has not been evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN or other major conservation bodies.
