Rathbun's Hinge-Beak Shrimp
Rhynchocinetes rathbunae
Rathbun's hinge-beak shrimp, a member of the family Rhynchocinetidae, is endemic to the Eastern Central Pacific, specifically Hawaii. This small crustacean reaches a maximum length of 3.0 cm for males and unsexed individuals. It is characterized by its preference for rocky substrates, which provides a suitable habitat for its benthic lifestyle. Divers may encounter this shrimp in various rocky environments around Hawaii, where it is known to inhabit the benthic zone. The shrimp's reproductive behavior includes a precopulatory courtship ritual, utilizing olfactory and tactile cues. This species follows an indirect sperm transfer method, which is common among members of the order Decapoda. Rathbun's hinge-beak shrimp has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, CITES, or CMS. Divers exploring the rocky reefs of Hawaii might find this shrimp, though its small size and cryptic nature could make it a subtle presence in the underwater landscape.
