Bumphead Parrotfish

Scarus perrico

Bumphead Parrotfish are commonly found in the shallow coastal waters of the Eastern Pacific, ranging from the central Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galapagos Islands. They inhabit depths between 3 and 36 meters, often forming small aggregations over reefs. These fish can grow up to 76 cm in length and are known for their distinctive feeding behavior. During breeding, Bumphead Parrotfish exhibit distinct pairing, as they are oviparous. Divers might encounter these fish over rocky reefs, where they are harmless and pose no threat to humans. Although they are only occasionally caught, they are part of commercial fisheries and the aquarium trade. The conservation status of the Bumphead Parrotfish is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Divers observing these fish can expect to see them in small groups, actively grazing on the reef surfaces, contributing to the health and maintenance of the reef ecosystem.
