Eastern Pomfred

Schuettea scalaripinnis

Eastern Pomfred, also known as ladder-finned pomfret, is a small marine ray-finned fish that belongs to the moonyfish family. It can grow up to 24 cm in length and is typically found in coastal areas of southeastern Australia, ranging from southern New South Wales to central Queensland. This species is often observed in large schools, especially around sheltered rocky ledges and coastal bays. Divers may encounter Eastern Pomfred in pelagic-neritic zones, typically at depths ranging from 10 to 30 meters. The fish are known to inhabit subtropical waters and can be seen near protected island coves, deeper parts of large estuaries close to sea entrances, and rocky drop-offs with kelp. Eastern Pomfred is harmless to humans and has not been evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN. Divers who come across these fish will likely see them schooling in open waters, making for an interesting and dynamic underwater experience.
