Windowpane Flounder

Scophthalmus aquosus

The windowpane flounder (Scophthalmus aquosus) is a left-eyed flatfish reaching up to 46 cm in length. Its name derives from its extremely thin, nearly translucent body that allows light to pass through, making it appear like a window pane. Found in the western Atlantic from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Florida, it inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 5 to 73 meters. This species is remarkably well camouflaged, lying flat on the substrate and changing color to match the bottom. Both eyes are positioned on the left side of its body, and it feeds on small fish, shrimp, and crabs. When disturbed, it can bury itself rapidly in sand with only its eyes protruding. Its extreme flatness and near-transparency make it a fascinating subject for divers interested in cryptic marine life and natural camouflage strategies.
