Stichopus horrens

Stichopus horrens is a medium-sized sea cucumber that typically reaches lengths of up to 30 cm. It displays a variable coloration ranging from grey to green or black, often featuring dark patches. The body is smooth but characterized by large, irregular papillae and tubercles, giving it an unusual and somewhat unappealing appearance. This species can be found in the Indo-Pacific region, primarily inhabiting shallow reef environments, seagrass beds, and muddy-sand bottoms at depths ranging from the surface down to 25 meters. It is often located under rocks or hidden among reef flats and dead corals, making it somewhat cryptic in its habitat preferences.  Feeding primarily on organic matter and detritus, Stichopus horrens plays a role in the ecosystem by recycling nutrients. The species exhibits nocturnal behavior, which may influence its feeding patterns and interactions with other marine life. Reproduction occurs during the warm season, with external fertilization and a low potential fecundity. The life cycle includes a planktonic larval stage before settling into its adult form. Encounters with this sea cucumber during dives may reveal its unique texture and coloration, but divers should approach gently to avoid disturbing its habitat.
