Blackspot Cardinalfish

Taeniamia melasma

The Blackspot Cardinalfish is a small reef-associated fish found in the Western Pacific, including regions like Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. It inhabits subtropical coastal reefs, often preferring sheltered areas with silty substrates. Divers can typically spot this species among branching Acropora corals. It is distinguishable by its pale pinkish-grey body adorned with numerous narrow orange bars along its sides. A prominent black band under the eye and a large black spot above the upper posterior edge of the opercle are key features that differentiate it from similar species like T. biguttata, which has a spot on the caudal-fin base that the Blackspot Cardinalfish lacks. This species is usually found at depths ranging from 2 to 12 meters, making it accessible to most divers. It forms small aggregations, providing an interesting sight for those exploring coral-rich environments. The Blackspot Cardinalfish is currently listed as 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List. An encounter with the Blackspot Cardinalfish offers a glimpse into the life of subtropical reefs. Its preference for Acropora corals means that divers will often find it in visually appealing reef settings, making it a notable addition to any dive experience.
