Largescale Grunter

Terapon theraps

The Largescale Grunter, known scientifically as Terapon theraps, is a medium-sized fish with a distinct appearance. It has an oblong, moderately compressed body with a dusky-green hue that transitions to silver-white on the belly. Notable features include four broad dark horizontal stripes along its flanks and a prominent black spot on the dorsal fin. The juveniles are brown with darker stripes and white spots, often hiding under floating algae, which aids in their dispersal. This species is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, from the southern Red Sea to Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, and as far east as New Caledonia. It thrives in tropical inshore waters, often found in brackish environments and among mangroves. The Largescale Grunter is typically encountered at depths of up to 10 meters, although it is most commonly found in shallower waters. The breeding behavior is notable, with the male guarding and fanning the eggs post-spawning. The IUCN lists this species as Least Concern, and it is targeted by fisheries using various methods. Divers might find this fish in coastal waters, where it is harmless to humans.
