California Puffball Sponge

Tethya californiana

The California puffball sponge, a member of the family Tethyidae, is a sessile organism found in the temperate waters of the Northeast Pacific, particularly around Canada. This sponge is part of the class Demospongiae, known for its hermaphroditic nature. During its life cycle, the zygote develops into a free-swimming parenchymella larva, which eventually settles on a substrate to grow into a mature sponge. Divers can encounter the California puffball sponge at depths shallower than 40 meters, with most occurrences recorded at depths less than 20 meters. It is typically found in environments such as rocky reefs and kelp forests, where it remains anchored to the substrate. The conservation status of the California puffball sponge has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and it poses no threat to humans. An encounter with this sponge during a dive offers a glimpse into the diverse marine life that inhabits temperate reef ecosystems. Its presence at numerous dive sites makes it a common sight for divers exploring these regions.
