Noronha Wrasse
Thalassoma noronhanum
The Noronha wrasse (Thalassoma noronhanum) is a colorful wrasse reaching up to 13 cm. Males display vivid green bodies with pink to red lateral stripes and a blue-green head, while females and juveniles are more subdued brownish-yellow. Found exclusively in the western Atlantic around Brazilian oceanic islands including Fernando de Noronha, Atol das Rocas, Trindade, and other offshore islands, it inhabits coral reefs and rocky substrates at depths of 2 to 60 meters. This species feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton. As an endemic species restricted to Brazil's offshore islands, encountering the Noronha wrasse is a unique experience available only to divers visiting these remote and pristine marine environments. Its vibrant coloring against the clear Brazilian island waters makes it a memorable photographic subject.
