Flowering Thorunna

Thorunna florens

Flowering Thorunna is a species of sea slug that belongs to the family Chromodorididae. This dorid nudibranch is characterized by its coloration, which can help distinguish it from other similar species. It is typically found in the Indo-West Pacific region, having been recorded in countries such as Japan, Thailand, Australia, and Indonesia. The species is often encountered in shallow waters, primarily at depths shallower than 40 meters, with most sightings occurring around 30 meters or less. This nudibranch is a benthic organism, meaning it resides on the ocean floor, often in habitats such as coral reefs and rocky reefs. Its diet primarily consists of small invertebrates, which it grazes on as it moves slowly along the substrate. Like many nudibranchs, Flowering Thorunna is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, allowing individuals to mate with each other. During mating, they engage in a unique behavior where they extend their reproductive organs toward one another, determining which will act as the male. Divers may encounter Flowering Thorunna while exploring reef environments. These nudibranchs can be found resting on various surfaces, making them relatively easy to spot. Observing their behavior and interactions can add an interesting dimension to a dive. Currently, the conservation status of Flowering Thorunna is not evaluated, indicating that there is insufficient data to determine its population trends or threats.
