Tiger Goby
Tigrigobius macrodon
The Tiger Goby is a small reef-associated fish found in the Western Central Atlantic, ranging from southern Florida to northern South America. It inhabits shallow marine environments, typically at depths of 0 to 7 meters, where it can be seen among rock faces, tide pools, pilings, and on the surfaces of large sponges. The species is characterized by its elongated body and distinctive pattern of 13 dark bands that are narrower than the pale interspaces. These features help divers identify the Tiger Goby from other similar small reef fish. Tiger Gobies are harmless to humans and are sometimes found in commercial aquariums. Despite their small size, reaching a maximum length of 5.0 cm, they are an interesting species for divers to observe due to their unique habitat preferences. They are often found under red algae, where they might be seen perching or moving slowly along the substrate. The conservation status of the Tiger Goby is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Divers encountering this species can expect a peaceful observation experience, as these fish are not aggressive and do not pose any threat.
