European Flying Squid

Todarodes sagittatus

The Mediterranean flying squid (Todarodes sagittatus) is a large, muscular squid reaching a mantle length of about 75 cm found in the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. It has a torpedo-shaped body with large triangular fins and powerful jet propulsion that allows it to launch from the water and glide through the air for distances up to 30 m, a behavior from which it gets its name. It is a fast-swimming pelagic predator feeding on fish, crustaceans, and other squid. While primarily a deep-water species, it may be encountered by divers during night dives when individuals or schools come into shallower water attracted by lights. Its rapid color-changing ability and jet-propelled swimming make encounters exciting.
