Southeastern Biscuit Star

Tosia neossia

Tosia neossia is an endemic Australian starfish recognized for its distinctive shape and coloration. This species typically has a flattened body with five arms that radiate from a central disc. Its surface can be rough or spiny, which helps to differentiate it from other starfish species. The coloration of Tosia neossia often allows it to blend into its rocky surroundings, providing effective camouflage against predators. The distribution of this starfish includes the southern coast of Victoria, the extreme southeastern coast of South Australia, and the regions surrounding Tasmania and the Bass Strait. Tosia neossia is commonly found in littoral zones, rock pools, and shallow waters, usually at depths not exceeding 26 metres. Most sightings are recorded at depths shallower than 40 metres, with many occurring at depths of less than 10 metres. As a carnivorous species, Tosia neossia primarily feeds on sponges and other small invertebrates. During reproduction, it releases orange eggs that are approximately 700 μm in size. Divers may encounter this species resting on rocky surfaces or hidden under ledges, showcasing its adaptations to life in rocky habitats. While specific conservation status is not mentioned, it is important to keep an eye on the population and habitat of Tosia neossia to ensure its ongoing survival in its native range.
