Trapania palmula
Trapania palmula is a distinctive sea slug characterized by its translucent white body adorned with rounded tubercles. This species features dense brown speckling and larger brown patches, with notable variations in pigmentation. A key identifying feature is the lateral papillae, which have a white patch surrounding a blue diagonal streak. The oral tentacles are tipped in dark yellow and have a dark brown band below, making it easier for divers to recognize among similar species. This nudibranch is primarily found in the waters of Luzon, Philippines, and has also been recorded in Indonesia and southern Japan. It typically inhabits shallow environments, with all recorded occurrences being shallower than 40 meters, and 90% of sightings occurring at depths less than 30 meters. The species often resides in areas where Entoprocta, its primary food source, grows on sponges and other living substrates. Encounters with Trapania palmula during dives can be intriguing due to its unique appearance and behavior. As a slow-moving creature, it can often be spotted clinging to sponges or other surfaces, providing divers with an opportunity to observe its feeding habits.
