Elegant Sand Diver
Trichonotus elegans
The Elegant Sand Diver is a marine fish found throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from the Maldive Islands to Micronesia and Fiji, extending north to the Ryukyu Islands. This species inhabits coastal reef slopes and deep outer reef lagoons, often in areas where channels create currents. Divers will typically encounter them hovering above sandy slopes or buried in sand when the current is slack. Identifiable by the long filaments on the dorsal fin of males, the Elegant Sand Diver has an elongated body that lacks scales above and below the lateral line on the anterior half. They are sociable fish, often seen in large groups that include several larger males. Their social structure usually consists of a single male and a harem of about twelve females. As protogynous hermaphrodites, they exhibit a reproductive strategy where individuals can change sex from female to male. Encounters with the Elegant Sand Diver are typically serene, as they are often found sitting still in the water column. They are harmless to humans and have been assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
