Blue-Spotted Goatfish

Upeneichthys vlamingii

The blue-spotted goatfish (Upeneichthys vlamingii) is a species of goatfish in the family Mullidae, native to the temperate coast of southern Australia. Adults reach about 30 cm with a pinkish to reddish body marked with distinctive blue spots and stripes. Like all goatfish, they possess a pair of sensory barbels on the chin used to probe sandy substrates for hidden prey. This species inhabits rocky reefs and sandy areas at depths of 5-80 meters from southern New South Wales around to Western Australia. They feed on small crustaceans, worms, and mollusks detected using their sensitive barbels. Blue-spotted goatfish are often seen foraging in loose groups, attracting other fish species that feed on disturbed prey. Their active foraging behavior and attractive coloration make them engaging subjects for underwater observation on temperate Australian dives.
