Green Swordtail

Xiphophorus hellerii

The green swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a small freshwater livebearer in the family Poeciliidae. Adult males reach about 14 cm including the distinctive sword-like extension of the lower caudal fin, while females reach about 16 cm without a sword. Wild-type fish display olive-green coloration with a reddish-brown lateral stripe, though aquarium-bred varieties come in many colors. Males use the sword extension in courtship displays. This species is native to freshwater streams and rivers at depths of 0-3 meters in Central America from Mexico to Honduras, but has been introduced worldwide. Green swordtails inhabit vegetated streams, springs, and river margins, preferring areas with moderate flow and abundant plant growth. They are omnivorous, feeding on algae, insects, and organic detritus. As livebearers, females give birth to fully formed fry. Their adaptability has led to established feral populations in many tropical regions worldwide.
