Cook Islands
Avana Passage
East Coast, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
A broad sandy passage opening from the Avana lagoon on Rarotonga's east coast — one of Rarotonga's signature boat dives. Depths 10-40 m through the passage with large coral formations on the sides, plenty of reef fish, and a steep drop-off at the outer end into deep water (schools of trevally, snappers, occasional grey reef sharks). Incoming tide creates an enjoyable drift into the lagoon; Advanced certification recommended for the drop-off.
