Breakwater / San Carlos Beach
Monterey, California, United States
Monterey's most-dived shore site and the training ground of choice for most California divers — a sandy-entry beach at the base of the Coast Guard breakwater on Cannery Row, with a gently sloping bottom that reaches 15-18 m past the outer pier. Resident harbor seals and sea lions work the kelp; nudibranchs, rockfish, kelp greenling, and metridium anemones carpet the pilings. Protected from prevailing swell, divable year-round.
