Carnatic (Abu Nuhas)

Abu Nuhas Reef, Red Sea, Egypt

A 91 m British P&O sail-steam passenger ship that ran onto Abu Nuhas in September 1869 carrying £40,000 in gold bullion — the oldest wreck on the reef. It lies on her port side in 17-27 m, with the iron hull ribs forming a skeletal structure coated in soft coral. Penetration through the rib cage is possible; resident glassfish inside, schooling sweetlips outside. Intermediate-plus; the Carnatic is among the atmospheric dives in the Red Sea.
