George's Reef
Guanaja, Bay Islands
A moored reef off George's Cay on Guanaja's south-east side. The top sits near 6 m. The reef drops to about 24 m. An early visitor described a shallow section crossing seagrass.
George's Reef lies off George's Cay on the south-east side of Guanaja. It was one of the moored sites on the island's 1997 buoy chart. The Clearwater Paradise dive map lists a range from about 6 m down to 24 m. A diver who came with Posada del Sol in 1987 made this his final dive of the week. He remembered it as an easy shallow dive over beds of seagrass. The shallow top suits snorkelers and newer divers. The deeper edge gives more experienced divers room to explore. Several Guanaja sites carry people's first names. This one is among them. Clark's Cay reports visibility near 30 m for most of the year around Guanaja. It can fall in the rainy season from about October to January. The same resort calls local currents mostly mild. Guanaja's fringing reef sits inside a protected marine reserve. Visitors pay a yearly fee to the island's environmental fund.
