German Channel

A man-made channel blasted through the Ngemelis reef in 1908 by German colonial engineers to shorten shipping routes. Channel width ~30 m, depth 10-20 m. Manta ray (Mobula alfredi) cleaning stations on the sandy plateau at 18-20 m — pre-eminent Palau manta site. Observed species also include grey reef sharks, eagle rays, schools of snapper and barracuda, and leopard sharks on the sand. Peak manta activity is new-moon tidal change. Suitable for Open Water divers in calm conditions.
