Cod Hole (Mermaid Reef, Rowley Shoals)
Rowley Shoals, Western Australia, Australia
A natural coral amphitheatre on Mermaid Reef — a cauldron-shaped coral bowl with a white sandy base hosting enormous friendly potato cod (not to be confused with the same-named GBR site). Depths 10-30 m with massive bumphead parrotfish schools, grey reef and whitetip reef sharks, schooling barracuda and trevally, and giant trevally. Mermaid Reef is one of three Rowley Shoals atolls rising from 440 m+ depth; visibility routinely 40 m+. Liveaboard-only (Sep-Dec season); Advanced certification. <200 divers per year visit the Rowley Shoals.
