Outer Chase Reef

Chase Reef, Pacific Grove, Monterey County, California, United States

The Outer Reef of Chase Reef lies in deeper water of roughly 40 to 110 feet, further offshore and north of Point Pinos off Pacific Grove, and is reachable only by boat. More dramatic than the inner reef, it is built of huge pinnacles, deep canyons and large arches, some big enough to swim through, with the deeper walls draped in white-plumed and rose anemones and a bed of rock scallops near the west end. Sheer walls and colourful anemones make it a wide-angle favourite, and sea lions, harbor seals and otters are often around. Within the Pacific Grove Marine Gardens State Marine Conservation Area (finfish only); a calm-day site, watch for surge, current and boat traffic.
